Program Description
The Department of Art’s MAT in Visual Arts Education is a 43-credit program offering instruction leading to both New York State initial and professional Visual Arts (all grades) teacher certification. The program is designed for people who have completed an undergraduate degree in visual art or design and who would like to teach art in PK-12 schools. Certificates for teaching in New York State are generally accepted for teaching in many other states.
Admission Requirements
-
A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in an undergraduate program
-
An undergraduate major comparable in breadth, depth, and rigor to the New Paltz undergraduate majors in Art or Design with a minimum of 30 credit hours in art, art history and/or design. Undergraduate coursework must include a broad and rigorous general education component.
-
1 copy of all official transcripts (including transfer schools)
-
2 letters of recommendation
-
Admission essay: A 300–500-word essay discussing why you want to become an art teacher.
-
Digital Portfolio: Upload a minimum of 12-15 images of original creative work.
Please note that we require a minimum of 12 individual pieces; up to 3 additional detail photographs and installation documentation can be included. You may include external links to videos as part of your portfolio. Each work sample must be labeled with the title of work, medium, size, and date. Images can be labeled and ordered as they are uploaded. For good image quality and fast upload, we recommend jpeg images no larger than 1280 x 1280 pixels. Each image should document a finished work or present a detail or alternate view of finished work. Please do not submit composite images that include explanatory text, preparatory drawings, and comparisons with other pieces. Our online portfolio includes a label section, and we encourage you to provide more details and context about your work there. You may also include an optional artist statement.
