Program Description

The Department of Art’s MAT in Visual Arts Education is a 43-credit program offering instruction leading to both New York State initial and professional Visual Arts (all grades) teacher certification. The program is designed for people who have completed an undergraduate degree in visual art or design and who would like to teach art in PK-12 schools. Certificates for teaching in New York State are generally accepted for teaching in many other states.

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in an undergraduate program   

  • An undergraduate major comparable in breadth, depth, and rigor to the New Paltz undergraduate majors in Art or Design with a minimum of 30 credit hours in art, art history and/or design. Undergraduate coursework must include a broad and rigorous general education component.   

  • 1 copy of all official transcripts (including transfer schools)   

  • 2 letters of recommendation   

  • Admission essay: A 300–500-word essay discussing why you want to become an art teacher.  

  • Digital Portfolio: Upload a minimum of 12-15 images of original creative work.   
    Please note that we require a minimum of 12 individual pieces; up to 3 additional detail photographs and installation documentation can be included. You may include external links to videos as part of your portfolio. Each work sample must be labeled with the title of work, medium, size, and date. Images can be labeled and ordered as they are uploaded. For good image quality and fast upload, we recommend jpeg images no larger than 1280 x 1280 pixels. Each image should document a finished work or present a detail or alternate view of finished work. Please do not submit composite images that include explanatory text, preparatory drawings, and comparisons with other pieces. Our online portfolio includes a label section, and we encourage you to provide more details and context about your work thereYou may also include an optional artist statement.  

  • An interview may be required.

Graduation Checklist 

  • Resolve any pending admission conditions (outlined in your acceptance letter) and/or missing documents if applicable.  

  • Review your progress report via my.newpaltz.edu to ensure that you have completed all program requirements.   

  • Remember that only two grades below a B- may be applied to yourplan of study. 

  • Contact your advisor if you need to amend your plan or process transfer credit.  

  • Ensure that you are in good academic standing with a GPA (Grade Point Average) of 3.0 or higher.  

  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress towards fulfilling degree requirements. 

  • Pass your capstone or culminating assessment.  

Requirements for Completion of Degree 

Candidates are required to: 

  • Develop a plan of study with an advisor upon matriculation. 

  • Complete no more than 6 credits of course-work toward the degree prior to matriculation. 

  • Complete prescribed course-work and other requirements within five years of matriculation. 

  • Maintain a cumulative average of 3.0 or better.  

Program Learning Outcomes

Candidates who successfully complete all required components of the MAT in Visual Arts Education program at SUNY New Paltz will be able to:

1) Use knowledge of contemporary practices in art, design, teaching, and technology to develop meaningful art educational curricula and experiences for children, youth, and families.  

2) Promote social inclusivity and critical thinking through curricular and pedagogic practices that are culturally responsive, environmentally responsible, student-centered and standards based.  

3) Use appropriate data and technologies to support effective decision making and teaching practices.  

4) Develop and articulate a self-reflective practice as researchers, artists, and teachers.  

5) Build professional networks to support the practice of lifelong learning.   

6) Apply curricular choices to support students' connections with local and global issues through the arts.  

7) Participate in a strong professional learning community with faculty, colleagues, mentors, and students in meaningful and supportive relationships.
