SUNY New Paltz's clinically rich 15-credit Intensive Teacher Institute in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages is designed for NYS Professionally certified teachers who have an interest in working with multilingual learners.
NOTE: This is a grant-funded program that is currently offered off-campus.

Admission Requirements

  • Evidence of NYS professional teacher certification in any subject area
  • One set of official transcripts from ALL undergraduate and graduate coursework from an accredited institution(s) with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale
  • Letter from current employer verifying employment in a NYS school district and assuring that they are willing to help you meet your needs in the district
  • One current letter of recommendation
  • Application essay explaining the candidate's interest in working with learners of English as a new language Commitment to attending orientation and all in-person class meetings
These requirements may be completed before or during the CR-ITI Program
  • Twelve credit hours of college level coursework in a language other than English

  • Achieve a passing score on NYS Teacher Certification Examination: Content Specialty Test (CST) -- English for Speakers of Other Languages

  • Evidence of successful completion of NYS mandated workshops

    • Recognition and Reporting of Child Abuse

    • Prevention of School Violence

    • Dignity for All Students Act (DASA)

    • Health and Safety
